In the plant room, theory goes so far, practical experience cements it. Since starting at Cattani in 2001, Hugo Douglas has supported systems across Australia and New Zealand, helping technicians, dentists and clinic staff plan all steps, from layout and commissioning to expanding plant room equipment designs. Not to mention the day-to-day diagnosis of faults, to keep clinics and institutions operating at full capacity, especially during times when the system must work.

His deep, firsthand knowledge spans from single-chair dental clinics through to major hospitals and universities in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Melbourne. He has also worked at sites in regional areas across the country, connecting with technicians and clinics at every step. This broad exposure has made him a vital resource when complex issues arise, and his role includes serving as a key escalation support for dealers and service technicians, focusing on clear fault isolation under time pressure.

He also provides commissioning and set-up guidance for Cattani SMART suction and larger plant room configurations, where built-in redundancy and long-term serviceability are integral. These steps directly support technicians in the field by ensuring systems perform reliably from the outset.

  • He provides practical troubleshooting for all generations of Cattani systems—from older units still in service to modern inverter-controlled SMART platforms.
  • He identifies real-world causes behind ‘intermittent’ issues, including site conditions, installation variables, system selection, and breakdowns in infection prevention and control processes.

Hugo entered the dental industry in 2001, but before that, he spent a gap year in Fremantle, describing his time as partying from Perth to Margaret River and back, while getting by installing car stereos. When reality set in, he returned to Melbourne in need of a steady income close to home. This led him to apply for a warehouse role at Cattani, and the rest is history.

For over two decades, he built his knowledge on the road, on site, in-house and by working alongside others—on the phone or in person—with those who install, service, and support equipment daily. This hands-on learning set the foundation for his later roles.

25 years in the making

Hugo’s knowledge comes from broad product exposure and a deep understanding of installed equipment. He became the go-to for service technicians needing troubleshooting advice. He led the service function, ensuring consistency in diagnosis and resolution, then moved into quality assurance, where attention to detail prevents major problems. These experiences shape his work as a Technical Equipment Specialist, giving him insight into field issues and practical solutions for system performance.

Within Cattani, Hugo is a trusted escalation point. Technicians can contact him via the technical support line or by email, with urgent cases prioritised for rapid assistance. Drawing on his model-by-model field experience, he helps teams resolve issues faster and with confidence. Hugo is seen as the encyclopaedia of Cattani, a reputation built on years of practical service.

Over the years, Hugo has watched plant room technology evolve. Early PAL system wet pumps gave way to more efficient semi-wet systems. Turbo Jet Modular units and Tandem Turbo configurations defined the modular “Classic” era, leading up to modern SMART suction. This evolution repeatedly presented the same core test: ensuring the promise on paper became reliable performance on site, a challenge Hugo met time and again.

One moment stands out from the early part of his career: the launch of Turbo SMART Generation 1 in 2005. Hugo recalls that it marked a leap forward from the Classic range. It was more compact, more controllable, more powerful, and designed to run smarter through inverter control. For technicians, installs were simpler, upgrades were seamless, and performance became more consistent. For clinics, it set a new benchmark for modern suction, shaping daily routines.

Hugo also points to the Turbo SMART HP-type centrifugal separator as a significant advancement that you appreciate more with time. It quietly lifted the separation performance and made service and maintenance easier. ‘I don’t think at launch we really knew just how good the separator was,’ said Hugo.

It has been a multifaceted approach with improvements at every touchpoint. He also recalls a shift toward packaging that is more technician-friendly. More critical accessories now arrive as standard, reducing guesswork, speeding installs, and helping deliver consistent outcomes from day one.
As SMART technology matured, it moved naturally into solutions for larger, busier sites—a shift Hugo witnessed firsthand. With variable-speed systems becoming part of universities and major facilities, factors such as redundancy, access, and long-term serviceability became as critical as performance.

Large-Scale Universities

When the over three hundred suction point Blok-Jet system was installed at a University in Queensland in late 2019, it marked an important milestone for the platform in the local market and was the largest installation of its kind in the southern hemisphere. For Hugo, projects like this bring everything together—planning, commissioning, and ensuring the plant is set up to be supported long after handover, in a facility that cannot afford downtime.

The installation showcased what the platform was built for: a variable-speed approach that can be sized for a major training facility and adapted over time. It supports efficient daily operations while keeping service access and future growth in mind. Hugo is proud of being part of the journey future dentists take through these state-of-the-art training facilities.

Been there, seen that, fixed that – imparting years of knowledge

Hugo’s commitment to sharing knowledge began well before today’s structured programs. That early spirit of hands-on training, walking technicians through real plant rooms, set the foundation for how knowledge is now passed on when conditions aren’t textbook. Today, this tradition continues through a range of available training resources. Technicians can participate in our comprehensive training programs, Blueprints, After Care, and INSITES by joining online learning modules and attending in-house sessions where they can learn directly from Hugo and other members of the technical team. These programs are designed to provide technicians at all levels with practical knowledge and real-world troubleshooting skills, ensuring that the transmission of product knowledge and practical wisdom remains central to Cattani’s core mantra, 100% reliability.

That approach helped Hugo build long-lasting, credible relationships across the dealer network and with all the service technicians. His on-site experience means his advice is practical and respected.

This is why technicians trust Hugo with complex jobs. Whether the challenge involves plant room design, installation issues, or diagnosing a challenge with an older unit, he consistently brings clarity, calm troubleshooting, and an aptitude for identifying elusive faults—a trust developed over years of practical experience.

After 25 years, Hugo remains hard to replicate. His depth of knowledge and experience set him apart. Dealer partners and service teams know him as someone who has seen it all, shares what he knows, and backs his advice with experience.
